Billy Joe Saunders would fight Gennady Golovkin “in a field” as he targets unification showdown next year

Billy Joe Saunders claims he would fight Gennady Golovkin “in a field” because he is so keen to face him.

Golovkin called Saunders out after beating Kell Brook and the WBO middleweight champion says he will be ready after his first defence on October 29 at the Manchester Arena.

Saunders, 27, will face either Russian Artur Akavov or unbeaten American Rob Brant, live on BoxNation, and says he could face GGG next in February.

“He keeps going on about getting my belt, well if he wants it, I’ll give him a chance to get it,” said the undefeated Traveller, who has recovered from a hand injury.

Saunders has not fought since beating Andy Lee last December

“I’m ready to fight him wherever he wants. I don’t care if he comes to England or America, I don’t care if it’s in a field.

“I’m fighting October 29. Give me a week off and then I’ll fight him after that. As long as a I shake a bit of ring rust off, I only need one fight and then I’m ready to go.”

Saunders feels Golovkin’s opponents are intimidated by the pound-for-pound king and he says he saw weaknesses when he watched him against Brook on Saturday.

“People are beat before they get in the ring with him,” he said.

Saunders wants to face Gennady Golovkin in a unification clash

“They’re like rabbits in the headlights when they look at him.

“He’s just a man and he’s definitely beatable, for sure.”

Promoter Frank Warren says he has already opened talks with K2’s Tom Loeffler, although he expects GGG to face the WBA’s mandatory challenger Danny Jacobs first.

“Tom Loeffler was at the Fury-Klitschko press conference and we had talks then,” he said. “My son George spoke to him this morning and we will continue to have dialogue.

“There’s a will on both sides to try and make this fight happen and I’d prefer it in Britain.”
