Tony Bellew reveals truth behind David Haye sparring session ahead of potential heavyweight clash

Tony Bellew has lifted the lid on his explosive sparring session with David Haye .

The two Brits could meet in a heavyweight sizzler next year after almost coming to blows last month.

And Bellew has recalled the time he and David Price took on their countryman in the gym.

In a Q&A with the 2017 Boxing News Annual, he said: “We punched him all over the place. I had just won my first ABA title, Pricey was still an amateur. David was supposed to fight Mark Hodgson, he came down on a Monday, sparred me and Pricey and pulled out of the Mark Hodgson fight on a Tuesday.

“Mark Hodgson knows why he pulled out, he said, ‘I heard he got a hiding off two heavyweights from Liverpool,’ and he did. He pulled out the next day with an injured groin, he didn’t have an injured groin he had an injured jaw. And face.

“He got a hiding off the two of us. It was a long time ago though, it means nothing.”

Bellew also admitted his rivalry with Haye is nothing compared to that he shared with Nathan Cleverly.

He added: “It’s not a real dislike, it’s nowhere near on the level it was with the fella from Wales. It’s nowhere near as personal as that.

“It’s just that Haye’s regarded as probably the best cruiserweight this country’s ever produced and I’d like to challenge him for that. That’s what it’s about to be honest. It’s definitely not a personal thing.”
